高功率微波是指峰值功率超过100 MW或者平均功率大于1 MW的强电磁脉冲辐射。高功率微波技术早源于对核聚变与等离子体的研究,自20世纪70年代以来,高功率微波产生技术得到了迅速的发展,国内外研究人员已在实现高功率、高效率及脉冲重复频率等方面取得了丰硕成果,目前该技术处于从实验室基础研究向工程化应用转型的关键阶段。
作为极有工程应用前景的高功率微波产生器件,相对论返波管具有高功率、高效率的优点,同时还具有较好的频率调谐和拓展能力,可用于产生L波段、S波段、C波段、X波段与毫米波段的高功率微波辐射。经过近半个世纪的发展,使用强引导磁场的相对论返波管已经实现C波段功率超过6 GW(效率达到36%)、X波段功率超过3 GW(效率达到40%)的微波输出。
然而,用于引导返波管工作的强磁场系统(包括螺线管磁体系统和超导磁体系统)存在磁体系统能耗巨大和体积庞大两方面的缺陷。磁体及配套系统体积远大于高功率微波产生器件本身的尺寸,严重限制了高功率微波产生系统的紧凑化和小型化。因此,降低相对论返波管工作所需的引导磁场强度,使其在低磁场下高效工作并终实现永磁包装,是推动高功率微波技术走向实用的重要技术路线。
