我的乐趣之一是为《科学美国人》杂志撰写专栏文章,这几乎成了我的专利,从1956年12月有关六边形折纸的一篇文章开始,直到 1986 年 5 月刊出的小斯坦纳树,长达 30 年 之久。
对我来说,撰写这一专栏是个了不起的学习过程。我毕业于芝加哥大学,主攻哲学,并没有读过数学专业,但我一贯热爱数学,当时没有把它作为专业,时常后悔不已。读者只要对这个专栏早期刊出的文章粗略地瞥上一眼,就不难看出,随着我的数学知识不断长进,后期的文章显得更加成熟得多。令我更难忘怀的是因此而结识了许多真正杰出的数学家,他们慷慨无私地提供了宝贵资料,成为我的终生至交。
本书是第15本,也是后一本集子。同这系列的其他各本书一样,我已尽了努力去改正错误,扩展知识,在本书结尾处增添补充材料,追加插图,力求跟上时代步伐,并提供更详尽而充实的、经过郑重选择的参考文献。
