哈里森·埃文斯·索尔兹伯里,一九O八年十一月生于美国明尼苏达州明尼阿波利斯市,一九二五中学毕业后,曾就读于明尼苏达大学,主修化学,后退学,从事新闻记者工作。一九三O年至一九四八年担任合众国际社记者、编辑;一九四九年三月,出任纽约时报莫斯科常驻记者,达五年之久。一九六一年以后,历任纽约时报编辑,助理副总编辑、副总编辑等职。二次大战期间曾深入前线,遍访苏联广大地区,著有《列宁格勒被困九百天》等作品,闻名于世。曾获得国际普利策新闻奖等奖励及许多大学的名誉博士学位。曾任美国文学艺术学会主席,现为全美作家协会主席。一九七二年后,已五次访华。
