于建华撰文的《蓬莱水城》介绍:蓬莱水城,在山东省境内,属烟台辖区的蓬莱市。“蓬莱”一词,*早见于《史记·秦始皇本纪》“秦始皇东行郡县……立石刻、颂秦德、明德意。既已,齐人徐市等上书,言海中有三神山,名日蓬莱、方丈,瀛洲,仙人居之。”那渤海、黄海中偶尔出现的“海市蜃楼”,便被认为是仙人居住的地方。随后,汉武帝寻仙来到此地便筑城日:蓬莱,蓬莱地名由此而产生。由于秦始皇、汉武帝对“蓬莱”仙境的钟爱,地名蓬莱便成为神仙之地的化身。到了唐贞观八年(634年),开始在此设置蓬莱镇;神龙三年(707年),升为蓬莱县,为登州东牟郡治。沿用至民国时期废府存县。1991年撤县设市。
