     (美)迈克尔柯林斯 

      大学毕业后开过出租车,做过建筑工人,一次偶然的经历让他有了成为医生的梦想。在芝加哥洛约拉大学医学院毕业后,到梅奥医疗研究中心实习,直至担任梅奥的骨外科住院总医生。后来回到家乡芝加哥开办了自己的医院,与妻子帕蒂和12个子女一起生活在那里,业余时光用来写作,还会参与The Narrowbacks乐队的表演。

  做医生,我不悔
值此中文版《梅奥住院医生成长手记》出版之际,我深表荣幸,并希望与每一位读者分享我生命里的一个重要篇章。
早在立志成为医生以前,我就渴望能成为一名作家。就在经历那一段喧嚣骚动、紧张得让人透不过气的住院医生岁月时,我意识到,这将是一段值得书写的人生。由于严重缺少睡眠,我预见到自己将不会总能清楚地记得周遭发生的一切,于是我竭力挤出时间来记录点滴感受与经历,有时是在手术前后,有时是在急诊室,还有时是深夜在兼职的医院里。直到现在,某个角落的箱子里还存有那些字迹潦草的记录。

4 年前的7 月
一个闷热难耐的周五下午,我们聚在梅奥医疗研究中心14 楼的一间小屋子里,准备参加岗前会议。再过一天,我们这些人就要正式成为住院医生了。挤在这间小屋里的人中有15 位聪明绝顶的骨科医生,这是他们工作的年。还有我——29 岁,曾经的出租车司机、建筑工人,一个对医学怀有极大的梦想与热情却没有足够证书证明自己能力的我。
我们开始轮流做自我介绍,有人来自大学优秀生联谊会,有人则是阿尔法· 奥米伽〇1的成员。梅奥医疗研究中心(后文简称“梅奥”)在世界上享有很高的声誉。我不禁开始怀疑自己到底是干什么来了。我就是那个急躁、不讨人喜欢的家伙,是一个迷恋着手术刀的“呆瓜”。
其他所有人早在医学院的时候就已经实习过好几轮了,其中大部分人还在之前花过无数个不眠之夜来写论文、做关于骨科的研究。可我呢,当我在医学院学习的时候,晚上会去货车停车场工作。我既没有搞过研究也没写过论文,并且仅仅只有过一次实习经历。我没有接触过成人外科手术的世界,而成人外科手术又恰恰占了梅奥骨科工作的相当一部分。
在介绍完规则后,一个身材高大、厚嘴唇、头发灰色还带着卷儿的男人笨拙地走到了台前,自我介绍说是部门主管约翰· 哈丁医生。他首先对我们的加入表示欢迎,接着简要地介绍了梅奥骨科的历史,追溯了一大圈名人,并表示我们现在从事骨科医疗工作是非常幸运的,因为科技已经有很大的进步了。
哈丁医生讲完后,一个小个子男人凑近话筒,这人满脸皱纹、镜片很厚。等到屋子里安静下来,他才开始介绍自己:“我是本杰明· 伯克医生,住院部主任。”他也说了一些欢迎的话,然后就开始讲述我们这个职业的神圣性,警示我们前面的路还很漫长,但又可以拥有强烈的满足感。“你们要在这里待上4 年,前两年是初级住院医生,后两年是高级住院医生。倘若你够努力、技艺也够精湛,那么在后一年,我们或许会考虑让你来做住院总医生。”在末尾,他说:“这儿就是梅奥。病人带着期盼来到这儿,希望从这里得到帮助,而我们也希望你们每个人都竭尽全力。”
后,伯克先生的助理——维欧拉· 霍普金斯向我们介绍年的任务:“梅奥下属有两个医院,你们都需要在这两所医院里工作。但是在年,你们中的12 人会去圣· 玛丽医院,另外4 人会去罗切斯特卫理会医院。”她还说期待再次见到我们,祝福我们都有一个“愉悦幸福的梅奥4年”。
接下来,我撕开了属于我的那个小盒。在“罗切斯特卫理会医院”的题头下,写着4 个名字:
