深夜,我倚着窗台俯瞰都市中心的夜色,浓雾下层层叠叠的高楼已不再灯火通明。身处当年上海的公共租界的一隅,看不远处的前法租界在夜色里安然入梦,油然想起一百多年来上海都市的风起云涌。几分钟前,当写完这本书的后一个字,我如释重负。
自从邂逅安德莱之后,我生活的重心只有赉安这个人了。安德莱的一双忧郁的蓝眼睛似乎一直在我背后紧盯着我,期盼着我。为了研究赉安和赉安洋行的历史,我几乎倾尽全力,但是,我仍然无法得到历史的真相,不仅因为档案资料的严重缺失,还有安德莱对外公的不甚了解,林林总总的疑惑和无法落实的资料总是找不到吻合的机会。也许,这只是一本给自己交代的寻找赉安足迹的小文,但我还是决定郑重地写下: 献给赉安。
毕竟,对于赉安这样一位给上海留下一百多幢历史经典建筑的建筑设计大师,我们无从深刻理解和判断其生命的历程,也无力将赉安洋行历史钩沉的空缺之处填满文字。尽管不免遗憾,却一直觉得应该给几乎被湮没的赉安的生命轨迹作一次认真的巡礼。
从1920至1941年,赉安从声名鹊起到知名度极高的历程伴随着无数的困难和坚持,以及曾经度过的许多茫然不知所措的岁月。他和他的伙伴们目睹了上海这座城市的巨大发展。1935年,以南京路为商业中心的公共租界和以霞飞路为主要商业街道的法租界都已经呈现出大都市的非凡气象。于城市建筑而言,租界的相互竞争触发的建筑开发热潮和华界的相对落后形成大上海的千姿百态。毋庸置疑的是,法租界公董局在城市规划和住宅建设的高档化方面更胜一筹。
赉安洋行几乎包揽了中国建业地产公司开发的房产项目的设计任务,而早与万国储蓄会合作的邬达克后来一直紧密地与美商普益地产公司合作并设计了不少脍炙人口的建筑作品。二十多年的时间里,赉安已经在法租界逐步掌控了大型建筑的设计和施工的话语权,虽有同行的激烈竞争,但赉安一刻不停地居安思危并勇往直前紧跟着建筑业的繁荣,顽强地坚守一个伟大设计师的责任和使命,以及不灭的理想主义精神。
赉安为我们留下的经典历史建筑众多,让我们漫步上海老马路,去阅读和感受那个房地产业繁荣时期的历史岁月,去感怀一个建筑大师孜孜不倦的创作追求和伟大的开拓精神吧。
