空间思维之于城市设计的意义是永恒的，城市设计师在一定的意识下和意境中，努力让自己成为意匠去按照一定的意向目标，营造城市空间意象，这一过程的意涵，形成了时空沉淀下的经典意图。在这个过程中，无论是对于面向历史的叙事性空间还是面向未来的理想空间，都同样需要城市设计的空间思维和构想能力去架构。

城市设计是一门历久弥新的学科，它犹如4000 多年前的陕西石峁遗址一样古老，像雅典帕提农神庙那样闪耀着永恒的魅力。
城市设计从本质上讲是一门解决建筑（群）之间及建筑（群）与外部空间多种要素的空间关系的科学，涉及政治、人体工程、社会文化、地理、工程等多学科的内容。近代工业催生了功能主义城市的出现，作为一种反思，人本主义的城市思想开始萌芽。19 世纪后叶，奥地利建筑师、城市规划师、画家卡米洛·西特（Camillo Sitte）对西方古典城空间美学的讨论可以看作是那个时代城市设计领域的学术焦虑。以《雅典宪章》为代表的现代城市设计推崇机器理性和功能至上，引导了其后40 多年的城市实践，其间问题不断显现。20 世纪70 年代开始，随着第二次世界大战之后城市快速发展模式的结束，城市矛盾空前尖锐，西方城市设计理论领域再次进入活跃期。一方面是人文主义城市设计思潮的回归，另一方面是用定量的方法开展类似于自然科学的探索。
今天，随着科学技术的发展、生产经济模式的快速迭代，城市变得越来越复杂。各种交通工程体系、信息技术与智能城市的支撑体系、应对气候变化的新的城市工程体系等，都使城市在各种物质流、信息流、社会流的交织中呈现纷杂多变的格局。我们不得不承认，人本主义只是这个时代城市设计众多需要考虑的平衡要素之一，因为城市已不能再回到中世纪及以前的状况。我们的城市既面临基本的环境生存问题，也坠入了无穷的技术选择的空前困惑；城市设计一方面要解决城市如何更有效地运转的问题，另一方面还要为人们提供回归人性的生活空间。所以，城市决策不再由单一要素所主导，而是多元社会力量制衡的结果。公众参与既为城市设计提供了多种选择，又使城市设计的角色变得日益不确定。在这一过程中，用中立的技术论证决策的“科学性”成为当下城市设计的必选动作。正如伦敦大学的一位教授所说，其实“空间句法”通过繁琐的计算机计算所能论证的结论和一位有经验的设计师所设计出的方案没有什么大的区别，但一个社会宁愿相信计算机的“科学”论断，也不能忍受设计师主观的“独断”。这里我们不能不去深究，在一系列数学模型编程的过程中，人的价值判断与干预形成的那些“科学的潜台词”的实际意义。
