1895年12月生于美国威斯康星州的密尔沃基。她从小就喜爱画画,曾就读于劳伦斯学院和纽约的美术学校。次世界大战后,她放弃了绘画,1944年她重返画坛,开始了图画书的创作生涯。

她一生共出版了二十一本图画书,其中《Mr.T.W. Anthony Woo,1951》获得1952年凯迪奖银奖、《和我玩好吗?》(Play with Me,1955)获得1956年凯迪克奖银奖、《彭尼先生的赛马》(Mr. Penny’s Race Horse,1956)获得1957年凯迪克奖银奖、《就是我》(Just Me,1965)获得1966年凯迪奖银奖,《还差九天圣诞节》(Nine Days to Christmas,1959)获得1960年凯迪克奖金奖。
