大栅栏地区作为北京老城的典型区域,除了著名的大栅栏商业街、东琉璃厂街,还有密密麻麻的胡同及数量众多的大小“杂院”。
大多数杂院在初原本是四合院,随着历史变迁,大部分或者被拆除,或者衰败,成了现在的“杂院”。北京以大栅栏地区为代表的旧城区域,由于其存在的普遍性和居住形式的特殊性,一直被社会和学界所关注。杂院内部的空间面貌究竟如何?居民的居住现状具体怎么样?这些都亟待更为深入的研究。
北京内城的大部分杂院是在四合院基础上发展出来的一种聚居的形态,这种形态常被理解为混乱无序,“破坏了”原有四合院的完整性。但如果换一个视角来理解,杂院之所以能够产生,恰恰源于四合院建筑的包容性,恰可说明四合院建筑的另外一个特点。同时,原有的四合院演变为杂院这一新北京杂院形态的本身正反映了居住者解决自己生存问题时的智慧,而客观记录下这些“没有建筑师的建筑”对环境的利用及改造状况正是本书的目的所在。
本书着眼于北京杂院,试图对以北京大栅栏地区为代表院落空间现状的特征和构成要素进行全面的分析。随着北京旧城的改造与更新,大栅栏地区存在了几十年的“大杂院”也在不断改造甚至逐渐消亡。但是杂院内部居民对空间的高效利用与相互之间共存的空间关系等都显示出很多民间智慧,这些对大栅栏地区的未来发展甚至更多的老城居住区的未来都很有参考价值。
