　　前言
　　在一个低气压的时代，水土特别不相宜的地方，谁也不存什么幻想，期待文艺园地里有奇花异卉探出头来。然而天下比较重要一些的事故，往往在你冷不防的时候出现。史家或社会学家，会用逻辑来证明，偶发的事故实在是酝酿已久的结果。但没有这种分析头脑的大众，总觉得世界上真有魔术棒似的东西在指挥着，每件新事故都像从天而降，教人无论悲喜都有些措手不及。张爱玲女士的作品给予读者的个印象，便有这情形。“这太突兀了，太像奇迹了”，除了这类不着边际的话以外，读者从没切实表示过意见。也许真是过于意外而怔住了。也许人总是胆怯的动物，在明确的舆论未成立以前，明哲的办法是含糊一下再说。但舆论还得大众去培植；而且文艺的长成，急需社会的批评，而非谨慎的或冷淡的缄默。是非好恶，不妨直说。说错了看错了，自有人指正——无所谓尊严问题。
　　我们的作家一向对技巧抱着鄙夷的态度。“五四”以后，消耗了无数笔墨的是关于“主义”的论战。仿佛一有准确的意识就能立地成佛似的，区区艺术更是不成问题。其实，几条抽象的原则只能给大中学生应付会考。哪一种主义也好，倘没有深刻的人生观，真实的生活体验，迅速而犀利的观察，熟练的文字技能，活泼丰富的想象，决不能产生一件像样的作品。而且这一切都得经过长期艰苦的训练。《战争与和平》的原稿修改过七遍——大家可只知道托尔斯泰是个多产的作家（仿佛多产便是滥造似的）；巴尔扎克一部小说前前后后的修改稿，要装订成十余巨册，像百科辞典般排成一长队，然而大家以为巴尔扎克写作时有债主逼着，定是匆匆忙忙赶起来的。忽视这样显著的历史教训，便是使我们许多作品流产的主因。
　　譬如，斗争是我们感兴趣的题材。对，人生一切都是斗争。但是斗争的范围，过去并没包括全部人生。作家的对象，多半是外界的敌人：宗法社会、旧礼教、资本主义……可是人类的悲剧往往是内在的。外来的苦难，至少有客观的原因可得而诅咒，反抗，攻击；且还有赚取同情的机会。至于个人在情欲主宰之下所招致的祸害，非但失去了泄仇的目标，且更遭到“自作自受”一类的谴责。第二是斗争的表现。人的活动脱不了情欲的因素；斗争是活动的尖端，更其是情欲的舞台。去掉了情欲，斗争便失掉活力。情欲而无深刻的勾勒，一样失掉它的活力，同时把作品变成了空的躯壳。
　　在此我并没意思铸造什么尺度，也不想清算过去的文坛；只是把以往的主要缺陷回顾一下，瞧瞧我们的新作家把它们填补了多少。
