皇家园林又称苑、囿、宫苑或御苑，是中国园林史上重要的园林类型之一，也是一种特殊形式的宫殿建筑群，很多时候也直接以“宫”为名。在中国漫长的历史中，帝王的地位至尊无上，处于整个社会结构的*，在政治上拥有无限的特权，在经济上拥有无穷的财富，倾尽人力和物力来营建皇家园林，征集全国各地的能工巧匠和各种奇花、异兽、怪石、珍玩，占据优越的地段，构堂筑台，堆山叠石，开湖挖河，栽花种树，达到同时代造园艺术的高峰。每一朝代皇家园林数量之多寡、规模之广狭在很大程度上反映了这个朝代的强盛程度——秦汉、隋唐和清代被公认为中国历史上的三大盛世，同时也是皇家造园之风鼎盛的三个时期。
本书内容分为四个部分，*章借助历史文献和图片资料描述中国皇家园林的历史源流，第二章介绍以现存实例为主的经典御苑，第三章和第四章分别探析皇家园林的造园手法和文化主题，努力以有限的篇幅为广大读者呈现出中国皇家园林真实而生动的面貌。
江苏淮安人，2001年于清华大学建筑学院获工学博士学位并留校任教，现为清华大学建筑学院教授、博士生导师、国家一级注册建筑师、《建筑史》主编、清华大学图书馆建筑分馆馆长，兼任中国建筑学会史学分会理事、中国圆明园学会理事，主要从事中国古典园林和中西方建筑交流领域的研究与教学工作，先后主持国家自然科学基金4项、北京市自然科学基金1项，出版专著8部，发表学术论文100余篇，曾获*“自然科学奖（二等奖）”“中华优秀出版物奖图书奖”“中国建筑图书奖”。主持和参与建筑、规划设计和文物建筑保护工程设计20余项。
秦汉
西汉继承了秦代的上林苑并加以扩建，方圆超过三百里，成为中国历史上规模的一座皇家园林，比秦代的景致更加壮观。上林苑外围依托终南山，关中八水从苑内穿越，丘陵起伏，平原广阔，天然植被和野生动物的种类极为丰富。除了天然湖泊河流之外，汉武帝时期还以人工挖掘大湖昆明池，面积约一百多公顷，以模拟西南昆明国的滇池，并曾一度在此训练水军， 以备讨伐西南夷，池中建有一座豫章台。上林苑广袤的范围内一共设置了36 座苑中之苑和12 座宫殿，还构筑了很多高台，例如眺瞻台、望鹄台、避风台等。苑中建有昆明观、平乐观等21 观，观是一种专门用于登高望远的木构楼阁建筑，大多为2 到4 层，造型十分丰富。这些建筑的具体形象可以参考出土的汉代明器（图1-2-6）。
上林苑不但是汉代重要的游乐苑囿，同时包含大量的农田、果园、菜圃、鱼塘、矿场、牲畜养殖场以及皇家作坊，迁徙了50 万奴隶和贫民在此劳作， 每年出产丰富的农牧产品和矿物、器物，对皇室而言具有巨大的经济意义。
汉武帝时期又在长安城外西侧营造建章宫，与上林苑联为一体。宫中建有大量的阙、观、台和殿堂建筑。“阙”是一种石构的标志性建筑，经常成对竖立在宫殿、园林、陵寝、祠庙建筑群的入口处。建章宫西北部辟为专门的园林区，园中仿效秦始皇的兰池宫，开凿了一片大水池，名曰“太液池”，池中堆叠三座岛屿，模拟海上的蓬莱、方丈、瀛洲三大仙山。此时“一池三山”的模式已经完全成熟，成为后世皇家园林常见的造园主题。太液池岸边修建高台，种植多种花草，各式游船在水上游弋，鸟类在空中穿梭飞翔，真的仿佛仙境一般（图1-2-7）。
