我在前面说过，秦王朝为中国文化打下了一个长久的底盘，汉王朝为中国文化树立了一个长久的框架，除此之外，还有一副长久的目光。现在，我们就要对视那副长久的目光了。
任何杰出人士都有自己的目光，有的目光还相当锐利和深刻。但是，有没有一副目光，成了整个民族数千年的共同目光？这几乎没有可能，但在中国文化史上却有一副，那就是司马迁的目光。
司马迁的著作《史记》成了以后全部“二十四”史的“母本”，他的目光也成了几千年间所有历史学家目光的“母本”，代代延续。正是这代代延续的目光，使全部历史获得了比较近似的精神价值归向，进入了上下相通的文化传承系统。这便使复杂的历史更“中国”，也更“文化”了。
我曾经在一篇文章中写道：
司马迁让所有的中国人成了“历史中人”。他使历朝历代所有的王侯将相、游侠商贾、文人墨客在做每一件大事的时候都会想到悬在他们身后的那支巨大史笔。
很多年前，我为北京大学各系学生讲授中国文化史，曾把不少篇幅留给了司马迁，当年听课的学生们可能还记得吧。
我当时说：
中国出版过一套考究的二十四史，装在一排檀香木的书柜里。
书柜上有很多小门，门上用隶书雕刻着每一个朝代的名称。于是，一场场烽火狼烟，一次次改朝换代，全部封进了文化的檀香木里，不再堂皇，只有安顿。但是突然，像被秋天的凉水浇了一般，我们看到一排排书柜的后，站着一个脸色苍白、身体衰弱的男人。
汉王朝拥有司马迁，又残害了司马迁。结果，在浩荡历史面前，汉王朝既因他而骄傲，又因他而羞愧。骄傲，可骄傲到雄视百代；羞愧，可羞愧到无脸见人。
司马迁的悲惨遭遇，在历史书里都能看到，我就不细说了。我只想表达内心的一种隐痛，那就是：这个人给了中国人一副长久的目光，而我们的目光却不敢在他身上停留太久。他的忍受，让我们难以忍受。
这让我想起一件事。前些日子，我正好在编写《古典今译》一书，原因是近几年端午节纪念屈原，很多年轻人喜欢朗诵我翻译的《离骚》，因此出版家们希望我再译一些篇目。我立即想到，篇目再少也要加一篇司马迁的自述《报任安书》。为了这篇文章，我还专门做了说明：
