本书是冯友兰于1928年到清华大学讲授中国哲学史期间所写（1931年、1934年分别完成《中国哲学史》上、下册，后作为大学教材）该书以“释古”的态度来写中国哲学史，得到了陈寅恪、金岳霖这两位审阅人的高度评价，被称为中国哲学史学科的奠基之作。

冯友兰北大哲学系毕业，又赴美师从杜威。他站在中西方、传统与现代的交汇处，用西方的哲学概念、系统地运用新方法来重构中国哲学：分子学时代-经学时代上下两编，从孔子到康有为，架构起中国两千多年来清晰的中国哲学发展脉络，把中国几千年来伟大的思想一一展现于世。是一部具有现代意义的中国哲学史。

作者简介

冯友兰（1895—1990）中国当代著名哲学家、教育家。1918年毕业于北京大学哲学系，1924年获美国哥伦比亚大学哲学博士学位，师从杜威。1952年后一直任北京大学哲学系教授，长期从事哲学教学和研究工作。他学贯中西，博古通今，是中国哲学史上一座横跨古今、沟通中外的“桥梁”，也是我国20世纪负盛名并赢得崇高国际声誉的哲人，被誉为“现代新儒家”。其成就可归为一句话：三史释古今，六书纪贞元。著有《中国哲学史》《中国哲学史新编》《中国哲学简史》（英文）《贞元六书》（《新理学》《新事论》《新世训》《新原人》《新原道》《新知言》）等。冯友兰几乎历经近中国一个世纪的世事变迁，人世沧桑，对中国哲学研究的贡献无人可代。

哲学本一西洋名词。今欲讲中国哲学史，其主要工作之一，即就中国历史上各种学问中，将其可以西洋所谓哲学名之者，选出而叙述之。在做此工作之先，吾人须先明在西洋哲学一名词之意义。
哲学一名词在西洋有甚久的历史，各哲学家对于“哲学”所下之定义亦各不相同。为方便起见，兹先述普通所认为哲学之内容。知其内容，即可知哲学之为何物，而哲学一名词之正式的定义，亦无需另举矣。
希腊哲学家多分哲学为三大部：
物理学（Physics），
伦理学（Ethics），
论理学（Logic）。
此所谓物理学、伦理学与论理学，其范围较现在此三名所指为广。
以现在之术语说之，哲学包含三大部：
宇宙论——目的在求一“对于世界之道理”（A Theory of World），
人生论——目的在求一“对于人生之道理”（A Theory of Life），
知识论 —— 目的在求一“ 对于知识之道理 ”（A Theory of Knowledge）。

就上三部中，宇宙论与人生论，相即不离，有密切之关系。一哲学之人生论，皆根据于其宇宙论。如《列子·杨朱篇》以宇宙为物质的，盲目的，机械的，故人生无他希望，只可追求目前快乐。西洋之伊壁鸠鲁学派（Epicureanism）以同一前提，得同一断案，其一例也。哲学家中有以知识论证成其宇宙论者（如贝克莱Berkeley、康德Kant以及后来之知识论的唯心派Epistemological Idealism及佛教之相宗等），有因研究人之是什么而联带及知识问题者（如洛克Locke、休谟Hume等）。哲学中各部分皆互有关系也。
