1965年秋天到1966年上半年,我和学生一起,在北京近郊农村的朝阳区小红门参加“四清”(“社会主义教育”运动)。那时,我毕业留校任教已有四个多年头。6月1日,中央电台广播了聂元梓等的大字报后,学校很快派进“工作队”,并要我们立即返回,参加被称作“文化大革命”的运动。踏入校门,看到到处贴满大字报,到处是骚动激昂的人群:这很有点像我想象中的或从文学作品中看来的“法国大革命”(或俄国十月革命)的样子。按当时的规定,我不再到学生的班里去,而返回教研室,教师集中学习、开会。
6月上旬的一天,我任班主任的那个班的一个学生干部来到我的宿合。敲开门后,站着且神情严肃地通知,下午去参加他们的班会。我问会议的内容,他不肯坐下,也没有回答径自离开。下午2点我来到32楼,楼道里贴满了大字报。也有关于我的,还配有漫画,好像是契诃夫小说中的人物凡卡在跟我说着什么——《凡卡》是我给他们上写作课时分析过的文章。我来不及细看,推开他们通常开班会的房门,发现全班三十几位同学都已挤在里面。所有的人都沉默着,屋里出奇的安静;都看着我,却没有人和我打招呼。我看到床的上下层和过道都坐满了人,只有靠窗边空着个凳子:意识到这是我的座位。便低着脑袋,匆匆走到窗边坐下。
